The Owner Blue Star Brewing Company was founded by entrepreneur and restauranteur Joey Villarreal and his wife, Magdalena. Joey majored in biology at the University of Texas San Antonio where he first encountered home brewing. After college, he opened “Joey’s” on North St. Mary’s in 1988. It was during a trip to Cleveland, Ohio in 1992, that the brewpub concept peaked Joey’s interest. He visited the Great Lakes Brewing Company at the time a 7-barrel brew house, and was drawn to the operation’s “realness” and human ingenuity. He spent the next 4 years developing his own operation, what in 1996 came to fruition as the Blue Star Brewing Company. The mission: To serve house-made craft-brewed beer using wholesome ingredients. In 2004, he opened the Blue Star Bike Shop located next door to the brewery to provide convenient fun transportation for exploring the historic San Antonio Mission Trail. The bike shop and the bar add even more appeal to the hopping Blue Star Brewing Company
