The Mambo Kings is a repertory orchestra based in San Antonio, Texas. The Mambo Kings performs classics of the Afro-Cuban big band tradition, commissions new compositions and arrangements, hosts international guest artists and is a vehicle for presenting emerging performing artists. The Mambo Kings continues the long tradition of artistic collaboration between Jazz and Latin musicians. As a collective group, the Mambo Kings pays tribute to the pioneers of Latin Jazz. The Mambo Kings use festive costumes and traditional big band music stands to evoke and pay homage to the classic appearance and panache of the great Latin bands of the forties and fifties, e. g. Desi Arnaz, Xavier Cugat and Perez Prado. This special performance will highlight the pioneering music of Tito Puente, Dizzy Gillespie, Mongo Santamaria, and Machito.
The Mambo Kings headlined the Fifth Annual Latin Jazz Festival in Brownsville, Texas, sold-out two consecutive nights at the Guadalupe Cultural Arts Center with their "Tribute to Tito Puente" show, and celebrated Cinco De Mayo with a Latin Jazz concert at the Carver Community Cultural Center. John Lopez is the musical director. Featured soloists include Jay Fort, Ed Sherry, and Jean Philippe Rominger among others. The Mambo Kings is very fortunate to feature Jazz vocalist Lisa Clark www.lisaclarkmusic.com
